Edward Gillespie, known affectionately as Ed, was a beloved member of his community and a dedicated public servant. He passed away unexpectedly on October 20, 2023, leaving behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on the lives he touched. Ed was born on August 21, 1956, in Kingston, NY, and grew up surrounded by the love of his parents Edward Parker Gillespie and Mildred Adeline Cullen Gillespie.
From an early age, Ed exhibited a great sense of humor which endeared him to all who knew him. His wit and sarcastic personality brought laughter to every conversation and brightened even the darkest of days. Ed's youthful spirit continued throughout his life, as he pursued various hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, cooking delicious meals for his loved ones, supporting the NY Yankees, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and his new puppies.
After graduating from Rondout Valley in 1974, Ed embarked on a remarkable career with the NYS Department of Corrections. For 35 years, he dedicated himself to ensuring the safety of others as a Corrections Officer and Sergeant until his retirement in January 2017. Ed's commitment to serving his community extended beyond his professional life.
Ed took immense pride in being a Life Member of the Kerhonkson Fire Company. He not only served on the Board of Commissioners but also held various positions of leadership within the company, including serving as Chief in the past. His dedication to firefighting and keeping his community safe earned him the respect and gratitude of all those who served alongside him.
In addition to his service with the fire company, Ed was a valued member of the Ellenville Elks organization. His contributions to this community-minded group further exemplified his generous spirit and commitment to making a positive difference. He also gave back by assisting with the Indian Valley Little League. His support and mentorship helped shape young athletes and fostered a love of teamwork and sportsmanship within the community's youth.
Ed's favorite role in life, however, was being a loving husband to his wife Cynthia Steers Gillespie, whom he shared many beautiful memories with over the years. His children, Megan Striano (Frank) and Brian Gillespie (Kristine), were a constant source of pride and joy for him. Ed adored spending time with his grandchildren, Ella Striano, Kassidy Striano, Marley Gillespie, and Jamie Gillespie. Trips to Disney World and Alaska were particularly cherished moments shared with his wife, children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Beyond his immediate family, Ed was also a beloved brother to Joyce Braidt and husband Joe and brother-in-law to Michael Steers and Paul Steers and wife Diane. Their close bond brought warmth and love into his life.
On November 18, 2023, a Memorial Gathering will take place at Humiston Funeral Home, Inc., located at 30 42nd Street in Kerhonkson, NY. The gathering will begin at 12:00 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 3:00 PM to celebrate Ed's life. Friends and family are invited to join together to remember this incredible man who touched their lives deeply.
Ed leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to serving others. He will be remembered as someone who always found a way to make others smile and whose kindness knew no bounds. The impact he made on his community as a devoted public servant will continue to inspire generations to come. Although he may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honor of Ed's memory and the joy he found in volunteering throughout his life, donations can be made in his name to the Kerhonkson Fire Company or the Indian Valley Little League. These organizations were close to his heart and serve as a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Ed, you will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May your soul find eternal peace, and may your memory continue to bring smiles and touch lives.
