Eleanor DeWitt

February 8, 1933 — August 20, 2011

Eleanor Cecile DeWitt of Accord, New York passed peacefully on August 20, 2011. Born in 1933 to Helen Margarethe Schauer and Harry Davis, she married Gerald Meade DeWitt in July 1955. A graduate of Kingston High School, she earned a bachelors in education from Geneseo Teachers College and a masters degree in education administration from SUNY New Paltz.

A lifelong educator who believed that any student could learn to read and write if presented with materials that were of personal interest, she taught in the Rondout Valley Central School district including stints teaching high school art, teaching 5th graders in the Accord Elementary School, and teaching 5th, 7th and 8th graders in the Rondout Valley Middle School. She also taught in the Giant Step/Head Start program in the Ellenville Central School District.

She was known for her direct manner, apple pie, Christmas breads, nut pastries, and hallway murals. Her life on Domino Farm allowed her the privileges and pleasures of multiple spoiled cats and dogs.

She is survived by her sister, Bette Anne DiOrio of Shelter Island, New York, her children Rocki-Lee DeWitt of Charlotte, VT, Margaret Anne DeWitt of Accord, Toni-Lynn Loveland of Rochester, NY, and Gerald Meade DeWitt and Anne Heather DeWitt of Accord, her grandchildren Robert and Andrew Loveland, Katherine and Amanda DeWitt, great grandchildren Alexa, Sarah and Hunter Herrera and many nieces and nephews.

Her courageous struggle with Alzheimers was graciously supported by family, the staff at Always There and a cadre of close friends. The family is especially appreciative of the care given by the staff at Blue Haven Family Home in Walker Valley where dignity, respect and kindness comforted her in her final years.

There will be no funeral or visiting hours. Friends and former students are invited to participate in a celebration of her life at an afternoon tea to be held from 1 until 4 pm on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the High Falls Fire House. The family has established a scholarship in her memory; donations to the Eleanor DeWitt Memorial Scholarship, c/o Rocki-Lee DeWitt, 6181 Greenbush Road, Charlotte, VT 05445.
