Richard James McElree

Richard James McElree, 88, of Kerhonkson, NY, passed away at his home surrounded by family on October 10, 2023.


Dick was born on April 26, 1935 in Gardiner, New York to the late Mary (Pole) and James McElree. A long-time resident of Kerhonkson, Dick served in the U.S. Army, worked at Valley Gardens, Christians Flower Shop, and retired from V.A.W. Aluminum.


Dick enjoyed camping, visiting local casinos, going to Maine with friends, and had a lifetime love of fishing. Dick won several top honors and awards for his fishing skills and was a consultant to local Rod & Gun Clubs. Everyone who knew Dick knew of his fiery personality, amazing sense of humor, and love for his family. He will be missed by all who enjoyed his company.


Dick is predeceased by his parents and his sisters; Ella Mae Edwards, Janet McElree, Gail Mednick, and Linda Decker. Surviving are his daughters, Fran Overton and Kelly (McElree) Wright; granddaughter, Amanda Wright (Nick); his sister, Donna (McElree) Wells; and many nieces and nephews.


Graveside services will be held on October 14, 2023, at 10:15am at New Paltz Rural Cemetery, 81 Plains Road, New Paltz. Arrangements are under the guidance of Humiston Funeral Home, Kerhonkson.
