Rita R. Lunden

Rita R. Lunden of Kerhonkson, NY passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at Kingston Hospital. She was 90 years old. Rita was born on November 18, 1920 in Eynon, Pennsylvania the daughter of Vincent and Mary (Donato) Piccione.

Rita had married Dag Lunden in 1948 and lived on Staten Island all but seven years of her life before relocating to upstate NY. Dag had passed away in 1992.

Rita's music career began when she was seven years old. She had the honor of singing for a noted poet, named Edwin Markham at an assembly at PS 16 in Tomkinsville, Staten Island. He was well known at the time. Her formal music education was acquired at Julliard School of Music in New York. Prior to Julliard, she studied at Steinway Hall, the 3rd Street Settlement School of Music in NYC plus individual tutoring. While on Staten Island she was a member of the Staten Island Oratorio Society and a long time member of the St. Cecelia Music Society. She sang some opera and oratorio and was soloist at Blessed Sacrament for many years singing weddings and funerals. She was a music teacher at Blessed Sacrament for 15 years and had directed the choir. After her move to upstate NY she became a member of the Fair St. Church Choir in Kingston under the direction of Percy Gazlay, singing with them for many years. She also was a member of the Friends of Historic Rochester and the Senior Citizens Group in Accord and an active volunteer at Ellenville Hospital for many years.

Rita is survived by her son, John Lunden and his wife Miriam of Homosassa, FL, her daughter-in-law Nancy Lunden of Kerhonkson, her sister, Marie Zickl of Southern Pines, NC, her 12 grandchildren; Rachel, John-Paul, Eric George, Krystal, Daniel, Stacey, Mariah, Erica, Dalton, Cassandra, Ashley and "TJ" and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Dag, Rita was pre-deceased by her son, Eric Lunden and her sister, Gloria Wintermeyer.

Visiting will be held on Saturday, October 1st at 11am at H.B. Humiston Funeral Home, 30 42nd St., Kerhonkson. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Kerhonkson at 1pm following the visiting. Burial will be at Pine Bush Cemetery.
