Obituary

Thelma J Finkbeiner of Kerhonkson, NY, passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2026, with her family by her side. Thelma was born October 11, 1939, in Brooklyn, NY. She was the daughter of Thorleif and Alice Olsen.

She had many wonderful childhood memories of growing up in Brooklyn, living there until she met the love of her life, Guy, on a blind date. Thelma and Guy moved to Kerhonkson where they built a home and raised their family, which was her pride and joy.

Thelma had a true servant’s heart. She worked in the cafeterias of the Rondout Valley Central School District for many years; cooking and serving meals to the students. She may or may not have snuck extra food for students she knew needed it.

Thelma served her community with all her heart, a trait she passed down to her family. Between the Kerhonkson Fire Company and the Accord Fire Company she was a Ladies Auxiliary member for over 50 years.

She was also a founding board member of the Kerhonkson Swim Team and a Girl Scout Leader. As well as a member of the Kerhonkson Federated Church, where she volunteered at their thrift store. She also volunteered at the food pantry.

Raising her family was her favorite “job” of all.

She was involved in and supported all of her children’s activities. As a family they went on many wonderful camping trips.

After her retirement, she and Guy began to enjoy Florida during the winters.

For over 20 years they enjoyed the “Snow Bird” life. She did not sit still when they were in Florida.Thelma was involved in the Red Hats, the sewing club, cards, Bonco just to name a few. She loved to go down to the jetty and sit by the river.

They met and came to cherish so many dear friends, and the Finkbeiner family is deeply grateful for the love, kindness, and support these same friends have shown them throughout this past year.

Thelma is survived by her loving husband and partner for life, Guy Finkbeiner; her children Nancy Valaderez, Guy (Rick) Finkbeiner (Amy), and Denise Belile; her adoring grandchildren: Nicole Spadaro, Sara Gross (Jared), Guy (Shivangi), Frank (Jennifer) and Daniel Finkbeiner; and great grandchildren: Corey, Arianna and Quinn; her sister and best friend Doris Bedell, her nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends who were like family.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law Brian Belile, brother-in-law Don Bedell and brother and sister-in-law Louis and Linda Finkbeiner as well as many dear friends.

A celebration of Thelma’s life will be held on Saturday August 29, 2026, at the Kerhonkson Federated Church, 35 42nd Street, Kerhonkson, NY 12446.

Visitation will take place at the Kerhonkson Federated Church, from 10 AM – 12 PM with a church service immediately following the conclusion of visitation.

Burial will take place at the Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson, immediately following the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kerhonkson Federated Church, PO Box 176, Kerhonkson, NY 12446.

On behalf of Humiston Funeral Home, it has been a privilege to care for Thelma and to serve the Finkbeiner family during this difficult time.
